The Carousel

By Geraldine

The Carousel went on to become The International 2 but when I used to go at weekends in the autumn of 1982 it was more of an Irish club, playing Brendan Shine and also some trendy dance music too such as Sharron Redd – I’ll Never Give You Up, Rockers Revenge – Walking On Sunshine, and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – The Message.

It had a cosy interior but often got raided by the police for under age drinkers and the local lads were a bit on the rough side and could be a real nuisance, so I didn’t go that often.

As a 2nd generation Irish lad, my parents took me here quite a bit in the 70’s to see the likes of Dermot O’Brien, Big Tom, Larry Cunningham and the many irish acts that played here – it was one of the premier Irish venues outside London.
Once the 80’s hit, I was there to see the likes of Trouble Funk and De La Soul, plus the band I was in at the time, had a couple of support slots here, courtesy of the legendary Roger Eagle.
