Photographs by Manc Urban Explorer Oldskool.
I stumbled across the work of Urban Explorers Critical Mass and Old Skool on Flickr when I was researching Hulme Hippodrome and they very kindly allowed me to publish some of their pictures on this site. I didn’t write up any background information at the time because I didn’t want to be nosey – the world of UrbEx is notoriously secretive.
But I am shocked that there isn’t more understanding and appreciation within the fine art community of this kind of work. Basically, if you don’t make ponsey statements about your artwork to justify its existence then the art establishment doesn’t seem to be interested. It all stems from public funding of art which encourages wordy grant requests, form-filling, academic networks and elitism and generally overlooks artists who aren’t bullshitters and/or who operate outside the system.
