Marcel King Reach For Love

By Geraldine

I used to hear this fabulous record on “Sunset Radio”, normally on Sunday afternoons when I lived in Hulme in the 1980s, and I wondered who Marcel King was – as it was a great name. I was then amazed years later to discover that his family were close neighbours of mine when I got married and moved house to Whalley Range. Sadly Marcel is no longer with us, but his beautiful voice will never be forgotten. This record was Fac 92 on Factory Records, and he also sang “Sad Sweet Dreamer” in 1975 with his very successful group Sweet Sensation, which got into the American billboard charts too.

  1. This film of Marcel King, and breakdancers Broken Glass, was shot at The Hacienda for The Tube, the same night Madonna was on the bill… 27th January 1984.
The film of Madonna and an article in The Guardian about this event at the Hacienda, written in 2005, can be found in the Interesting Links on the right of this page.
Thanks to Greg Wilson for recommending the Guardian article.

  2. Hiya – thanks for your message… that’s a great idea for an article as there are many people who knew him who still live in this area – thanks!
