Northern Soul Scene

The European Soul Weekender at the Palace Hotel on the Spring Bank Holiday was a Northern Soul event. Apparently ‘European Soul’ is a new name for ‘Northern Soul’… and there is a genuine European scene, with DJs and fans regularly crossing the English Channel and the Irish Sea to attend one anothers’ events. The scene seems to be very purist; I saw plenty of talc on the dancefloor and the music was almost all 60s, with only a few 70s tracks thrown in at the after party.

The people were lovely… extremely friendly; all ages… lots of 60s retro clothes going on. The experience led me to dig out this article from an old copy of City Life, to get some local history on the whole scene.
